DigiD, digital identity system in The Netherlands
DigiD is an authentication system that helps people access to public electronic services in a more direct way. The system, adopted by an increasing number of organizations and governmental agencies, allows to digitally authenticate the identity of any person who applies for an electronic service via the Internet through a single login.
In order to start using DigiD, the person must choose a login code for the full spectrum of contact with different governmental bodies by entering www.DigiD.nl. Being this the basic service, there is another one which requires an additional code sent by SMS.
One hundred municipalities, the ‘Land Registry’, the ‘Centre for Work and Income’ and the’ Social Insurance Bank’ among other bodies are now connected to DigiD. More than 1,2 million citizens already use the system.
Some of the services available through DigiD are: ‘Paying municipal taxes’, ‘Paying parking fines’, and ‘Notification of a change in address’.
